These two prints were recently found in Newport Memorial Hall along with a similar one reflecting Newport characters. It appears that they date from around 1935.
The artist has simply called himself “Matt” – apparently he usually drew for the Sunday Graphic which was a Fleet Street tabloid. Quite how he came to know and draw the characters of West Wales is uncertain although it appears that all parts of the County were subject to his wit in 1935.
Interestingly ladies feature on the Fishguard and Goodwick prints but not so on the Newport one!!
