Beth am Corona? / Who’s for a Corona?

Diolch i berson anhysybys nath alw yn siop ‘Ein Hanes’ ar y Sgwâr yn ddiweddar, a llawer o ffrindiau ‘Facebook’, rydym erbyn hyn yn gallu ateb pwy a ble i’r llun hwn. Yn Rhif 19, Y Wallis, ar y llaw chwith wrth fynd lan, roedd siop yn gwerthu Corona. Y teulu Davies oedd yno, ac yma gwelir Mattie Davies (Mattie Davies gynt), gyda’i chwaer Katie Judge a Norman Davies, mab Mattie. Aeth Katie i fyw i Gaerdydd.

Roedd Mattie Brown yn rhedeg siop gweithio popeth yn ystafell ffrynt ei chartre’, lle roedd plant lleol yn galw am losin ar ôl ysgol – cyffrous iawn yn y 1950au! Roedd hyn ar adeg pan oedd siop groser a becws hefyd yn Hamilton Street gerllaw. Mae mab Mattie, Norman, yn dal i fyw drws nesaf lan o rhif 19, ac mae Nigel yn byw yn Wdig. Bu farw mab hynaf Mattie, Tony, rai blynyddoedd yn ôl. Roedd y Wallis yn lle arbennig i fyw ynddo gyda chymuned glos.

Y teulu Davies oedd yn gyfrifol am sefydlu y cwmni Fishguard Fruit yn Y Dyffryn yn Wdig.

Awgrymwyd dyddiad posib ar gyfer y llun o ddechrau’r 1950au. Os wes mwy o wybodaeth neu ffotograffau gennych yn dangos y Wallis slawer dydd, byddwn yn falch medru eu rhannu fan hyn.

An update
Thanks to an unknown Fishguardian who called into the ‘Ein Hanes’ shop on the Square recently, and a host of ‘Facebook friends’ we are now able to answer the who and where to this picture. At No. 19, the Wallis, on the left hand side going up, there was a shop selling Corona. The Davies family ran the shop, and here you can see Mattie Davies (nee Brown), with her sister Katie Judge and Norman Davies. Katie went to live in Cardiff.

Mattie Brown ran a general store in the front room where local children called for sweets after school – a treat in the 1950’s! This was at a time when there was also a grocery shop and bakery in nearby Hamilton street. Mattie’s son Norman still lives next door up to no 19, and Nigel lives in Goodwick. Mattie’s oldest son Tony passed away some years ago. The Wallis was a special place to live with a close knit community.

The Davies family was responsible for establishing the Fishguard Fruit company in Dyffryn, Goodwick.
