Guides Abergwaun /Fishguard Guides

Mae’r llun yma yn dangos merched ifanc y dre mewn dwy wisg – gwisg ‘guides’ a gwisg Ysgol Ramadeg Abergwaun. Rydym yn teimlo mai tua 1950 y cymerwyd y llun, ond does dim llawer mwy o wybodaeth am yr achlysur. Ydych chi’n gallu helpu gydag enwau neu gwell syniad o ‘pryd a pham?

Pob Nadolig byddai’r “Guides” yn cynnal parti Nadolig. Byddai yn cael ei gynnal yn y neuadd gwinio yn yr hen ysgol lan ger y Bigney. Byddai hawl gan bob merch i wahodd bachgen i’r parti, ac fe fyddai  pawb yn eistedd yn ôl eu ‘tý’ o fewn y mudiad – un ford fawr i bob tý. Roedd cystadleuaeth ar gyfer addurno’r ford a chreu y ‘centrepiece’ gorau. Byddai dawnsio hefyd. Byddai’r merched yn cerdded i’r parti mewn sgidiau bob dydd, gan gario ei sgidiau gorau i’w gwisho yn y neuadd yn unig. Os byddai’r bachgen yn wr bonheddig, byddai’n cario yr esgidiau wrth hebrwng y ferch yn ôl I ddrws ei chartref.

This photo shows a group of young ladies from the town wearing two types of uniform – some wear a ‘guides’ uniform and the others the Fishguard Grammar School outfit. We think the picture was taken around 1950, but there is not much information about the circumstances. Can you help with suggestions of names or ideas of when and why the photo was taken?

Every Christmas the “Guides” would have a Christmas party. It would be held in the old school dining hall, up near the Bigney. Every girl guide would have the right to invite a boy to the party, and everyone would sit according to their ‘house’ within the organization – one big table for each house. There was a competition for decorating the table and creating the best ‘centrepiece’. There would be dancing too. The girls would walk to the party in their every day shoes, carrying her best shoes to wear in the hall only. If the boy was a young gentleman, he would carry the shoes while escorting his partner back to the door of her home.
