Temperance Hall

Temperance Hall
Henry Jackson- Ein Hanes

A rare photograph of the Temperance Hall, now the home of Theatr Gwaun, showing the original frontage.

This building was first built as a Temperance Hall at a time when the Temperance Movement was at its height. The local Rechabites group (another Temperance society) met at the hall and it was a regular venue for all larger events in Fishguard, from Eisteddfodau through to fund raising fairs.  Around the turn of the twentieth century it also served as a school when the British School opened in direct opposition to the National School in Hamilton Street. The National School was linked to the Church whereas the British School was Non Conformist.

From about 1919 it was a picture house and in the1970s was the go to place on a Saturday for local youngsters when it was known as The Studio. It enjoys continued life in the 21st Century as the home of Theatr Gwaun hosting films and live events and is run by a  community trust.  (see also Fishguard Cinema / Sinema Abergwaun )

The above photo is believed to date from around 1890 and was probably taken by local photographer, Henry Jackson. It forms part of an album recently lent to Ein Hanes on Fishguard Square.

The three men in the photographer are identified in the album – left to right Walter Vaughan, George Williams and Sem Jones. Walter Vaughan was a local Solicitor – Sem Jones had moved with his family to Aberdare by 1891 so unless he had returned on a visit it can be assumed that the photograph is earlier than 1891.

A sign on the building on the left records the West End Hotel which is the building now occupied by Fishguard Post Office.
