On the 6th June 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War 1, an end of a era occurred – the mail service for Fishguard changed from horse drawn mail cart  to a motor van.

The Western Mail recorded the event with two photographs – the first showing the horse drawn mail cart arriving at Haverfordwest on Saturday 6th June  on its final journey from Fishguard and the second photograph showing the brand new mail van on its inaugural journey to Fishguard the following morning, Sunday 7th June 1914.
