County Echo 5-12-1907 "Airship at Goodwick.—The dirigibile balloon, La Patrie," belonging to the French Government, whose erratic progress across the British Isles has aroused widespread interest, passed over Goodwick shortly before 8.30 a.m. on Sunday 1st December. Due to the early hour, but a few witnessed the unique spectacle. Syndod mawr i ychydig lwcus o drigolion Wdig oedd gweld llongawyr “La Patrie” ar Ddydd Sul, Rhagfyr 1af 1907. Yr oedd y llong wedi cael ei adeiladu gan beirianwyr ar gyfer llywodraeth Ffrainc yn 1906. Fe fu’r Prif Weinidog Clemenceau ar ei bwrdd ar gyfer taith dros y prif ddinas, Paris. Ond, erbyn diwedd 1907, yr oedd problemau technegol a thywydd gaeafol yn golygu bod “La Patrie” wedi dianc ac ar goll.

Mae’r County Echo yn cofnodi mai am hanner awr wedi wyth y bore y gwelwyd hi yn cyrraedd Wdig, o gyfeiriad Pencaer, cyn iddi symud tuag at Aberteifi. Gwelwyd hi yn ddiweddarach dros Iwerddon, ond erbyn diwedd y flwyddyn yr oedd wedi diflannu am byth.

Awyrlong lled anhyblyg oedd “La Patrie”, y gyntaf i gael ei harchebu gan lywodraeth Ffrainc at ddibenion milwrol.

It was a surprise for a few lucky residents of Goodwick to see the airship “La Patrie” on Sunday, December 1st 1907. The ship had been built by engineers for the French government in 1906, when the French Prime Minister, Clemenceau, had bravely taken an aerial trip over the sights of Paris. But, by the end of 1907, technical problems and stormy weather meant that “La Patrie” had escaped and was lost.

The County Echo records that at half past eight in the morning she was seen above Goodwick, traveling from the direction of Pencaer, before she moved towards Cardigan. She was later seen over Ireland, but by the end of the year she had disappeared, never to be seen again.

“La Patrie” was a semi rigid airship, the first to be ordered by the French government for military purposes.
