  • Dyffryn is my real home – since 1935 when I was 2 years old, my parents moved from Stop & Call down to the bottom house in Cross Street: next door to Ivor Jones’s garage. After some years my parents bought the top house in Cross Street “Glan yr Afon”. I’m not sure, but I think Dad gave it this name.
I left home – unwillingly – at 15, to start an apprenticeship in the Royal Naval Dockyard in Devonport. Five years later I finally achieved my ambition and joined the Merchant Navy. After a year or so, I learned that my income would double if I joined the Royal Navy. It was irresistible!! In retrospect, I was so fortunate. The Royal Navy was at its strongest and still growing. Three years later I transferred – by accident really – to the Fleet Air Arm, and this opened up a completely new world where I was privileged to share my life with some of the nicest and bravest people one could imagine. I return home at every opportunity. Covid 19 has interrupted my recent travel plans – but not for long, I hope. Now – fully retired and waiting for the end, I have my fond memories of Dyffryn – my real home – to cherish.
