Ar droad yr 20fed ganrif, olew paraffin we’r tanwydd i oleuo y rhan fwyaf o gartrefi. Oherwydd hyn, roedd gwerthwr olew ym mhob tref a phentre. We rhain yn adnabyddus i bawb ac yn amal yn gymeriade diddorol. ‘Felix yr Oil’ we’n gwerthu olew yn Abergwaun tra’n byw ym Mhenslad. Yn ardal Trefin, ‘Ben yr Oil’ we’n gwerthu. Rhaid bod eraill yn ardaloedd Dinas, Treletert, Casmael ayyb. Uchod mae llun ‘Morris yr Oil’ o Wdig. Wedd e’n byw mewn lle bach digon plaen ar y rhos, ger Penfeidir, Stop and Call, Wdig. We ganddo asyn a muwlyn i dynnu’r cart olew o gwmpas Wdig a’r ffermydd cyfagos. We Morris yn ddyn addysgedig ac yn deall tipyn am wella cleifion. Bydde cwsmeriaid yn gofyn cyngor ganddo yn amal. Ar ddiwedd dwarnod hir ar y ffordd, bydde’r asyn yn aros yn amyneddgar wrth ddrws tafarn y Glendower tra bod Morris y tu fewn. Fe fydde Morris yn hapus iawn yno am sawl awr. Wrth iddo ddod i’r golwg yn y drws, fe fydde’r asyn yn hollol abal i’w gario gatre heb unrhyw help wrth ei feistr! Yr un we’r drefn ar ddydd Sadwrn. Yr unig wahaniaeth fydde bod dillad Morris yn fwy trwsiadus, a’r asyn wedi ei gyfnewid am y muwlyn. Fyddai’r canlyniad diwedd dydd yr un peth. Fe fydde Morris yn cyrraedd gartre heb weld dim o’r daith – yn hwrn gwsg! | At the turn of the 20th century, paraffin oil was the fuel of choice to light most homes. Because of this, there was an oil vendor in every town or village. They were well known to everyone and were often interesting characters. ‘Felix the Oil’ would sell paraffin oil in Fishguard while living in Penslade. In the Trefin area, ‘Ben the Oil’ would be the vendor. There must have been others in Dinas, Letterston, Puncheston etc. Above is a picture of ‘Morris the Oil’ from Goodwick. He lived in a small, plain abode on the moor, near Penfeidir, Stop and Call, Goodwick. He has a donkey and a mule to pull the oil cart around the village and the surrounding farms. Morris was an educated man and understood a lot about healing ailments. Customers would often ask him for health advice. At the end of a long day on the road, the donkey would wait patiently at the door of the Glendower pub while Morris was inside. Morris would be very happy there for several hours. When he eventually emerged, the donkey would carry him home no matter how much he had drunk. The procedure was the same on Saturday. The only difference would be that Morris had changed to better clothes and the donkey has been exchanged for the mule. The result at the end of the day however, would be much the same. Morris would arrive home without witnessing any of the journey – fast asleep! |
