Early views of Goodwick

Goedwig Chapel under construction

View from Goodwick moor
Henry Jackson- Ein Hanes

These two photographs are quite early views of Goodwick taken just months apart in around 1872. The photographer was Henry Jackson of Fishguard and the photographs form part of a collection currently on loan at Ein Hanes Heritage Centre on Fishguard Square.

They can be dated quite precisely as if you look very closely, on the left edge of each photograph can be seen Goedwig Chapel – in each image, it has scaffolding around it – in the first image the roof has yet to be slated and in the second, the roof has been slated but the windows have yet to be fitted.  Goedwig Chapel was opened in 1873 so presumably this is some time in 1872. Goedwig Chapel closed in 2022 and was the last place of worship in Goodwick.  For more information on Goedwig Chapel   Click here

Very little development exists on Goodwick hill at this time – although the track which will in forty years become the road to Harbour Village can be seen snaking up the hillside. At the base of the track it is possible to pick out the white building of the original Berachah Chapel.

On the edge of the beach, the building next to the limekiln would have been the number 1 lifeboat station.
