Goodwick Square

Goodwick Square & Berachah Chapel

Another view of Goodwick Square which has been extensively altered over the years. The newly built English Baptist Chapel of Berachah chapel can be seen and the very narrow road in front of the chapel on the New Hill, leading up to Pen Cw or Harbour Village. The row of cottages opposite the chapel, known as Duke Street, has since been demolished.

The name “Berachah” is the Hebrew word for”Blessing”. The Chapel was first built in 1830 as a Welsh Calvanistic Methodist Chapel. It was restored in 1906 and designed by William Jones of Ton Pentre in the classical style. After this, and with the coming of the new Harbour development, the Welsh speaking C.M Chapel became an English speaking Presbyterian Chapel to attract the influx of English speakers who moved to the area. The Chapel has closed only very recently.
