This newspaper cutting from the County Echo was contributed  by Keith Bean. The cutting is dated February 1961, the location is St Peter’s Church in Goodwick and all the people in the images are named.  Does anyone know what the occasion was?

In the top image, the group are standing before the Altar in the main body of St Peter’s Church. In the lower image, a smaller group are standing in the beautiful Lady Chapel of St Peter’s Church.

  • I was a choir boy at St Peter’s
@ 1950. I remember Mr Waldron – lay preacher. The vicar about that time was Rev James. Mrs Morris from Quay Rd was the organist.
The church is now disused I believe.

  • I knew all the characters in the lower picture as my father was Rev. Vernon Johns, vicar of St Peter’s from 1952 to 1967. Lewis Jenkins and Denis Gronow were his tried, trusted and highly regarded churchwardens. Mr Waldron was his lay reader who occasionally took services. Morgan James was regarded as chief chorister and apart from having a lovely ‘basso profundo’ voice, he kept us unruly choirboys firmly under the thumb during services. One look from Morgan was enough to send shockwaves through the choir stalls!
The painting in the lady chapel of Mary being visited by the angel was commissioned by St Peter’s and painted by an artist from Laugharne. I went there as a small boy with my father to view it and remember it being installed in church. I think the Bishop and local clergy may have been there to give it a formal blessing.
