Y Teulu John - Tý Abertawe / Swansea House

The County Echo 30-10-1902

A previous post centred around an old photograph of the HMS Vulcan which had the name “G John – Swansea House, Goodwick” written in ink on the back. Lately, much new information has come to light about the possible identity of “G John”……..

The marriage of —
William Bowen Lewis, bachelor, 22yrs from Penycwm, carpenter in the Royal Navy, son of David Lewis, labourer.
&
Georgina A John, spinster, 21yrs from Swansea House, Goodwick, daughter of David John, tailor.
Both parties signed their names.
Thomas Nicholas & Sarah Ellen John were witnesses.
1909 Mehefin / June 26
The ship ‘Clan Macpherson’ sailed from Newcastle, N.S.W., Australia with a cargo of coal for Valpariso. Timothy M John was on board. The ship never reached Valpariso. All 25 crew were supposed drowned. Board of Trade enquiry was held in November the following year.
1909, 18 November -The County Echo. Overdue. Information received from the Admiralty by the owners of the ship Clan Macpherson states H.M.S. Challenger searched Kermadoc Island, but saw no sign of the Clan Macpherson heavy gale prevented communication with Sundy Island.” The vessel, which had been long overdue, had as one of her officers the son of Mr and Mrs John, of Swansea House, Goodwick, with whom the utmost sympathy is felt.

So, all of the above sheds much light on the John family, and the possible connection with HMS Vulcan – but without a conclusive answer! Miss Georgina John probably took the little photo to be framed, but was it one of her brothers on board the Vulcan, or her ‘husband to be’ William?   The quest continues…….
