A view of the outer breakwater from Pebbly beach

This view shows the quarry around the corner from the main harbour works at what is now known as Pebbly Beach. Much of the stone was used to extend the northern breakwater and also to construct the eastern breakwater. You can see the Titan crane right at the end of the northern breakwater so this has to be circa 1918. The mind boggles when you consider that all this work was achieved with quite crude steam excavators and sheer manpower, a few hundred tons of explosives probably helped though!!
