The sight of the otterhounds in the river at Lower Town providing some local excitement. A pack of otterhounds was kept by Mr John Worthington of Glyn-y-mêl and, though this photograph dates from much later, the activity here is much the same. The hounds are  supervised by  their kennel hands who maximised their chances of success by operating when the river was at it’s most shallow.

Mr Worthington passed away in 1906, and Glyn-y-Mêl was passed on to his nephew, Robert Chambers who continued many of the practices and traditions put in place by his uncle. He spent thirty years at Fishguard till his death in 1937, aged 90.

In Worthington’s day, the hounds were supported by  riders on horseback. Gradually, the horseback supporters dwindled and were replaced by observers on foot and early motor vehicles, as in this photo.

Golygfa o gŵn helfa dwrgŵn yn yr afon yn y Cwm yn rhoi rhywfaint o gyffro lleol. Cadwyd pac o helgŵn gan Mr John Worthington, Glyn-y-mêl ac er bod y llun hwn dipyn ar ôl ei gyfnod e, mae’r gweithgarwch ddigon tebyg. Gellir gweld yr helgŵn yma gyda gweision y plâs. Bydden nhw yn dewis  ‘mynd mas’ pan we’r  afon  yn isel  er mwyn  gwella  siawns  y cŵn yn erbyn y dwrgi.

Bu farw Mr Worthington yn 1906, a throsglwyddwyd Glyn-y-Mêl i’w nai, Robert Chambers a barhaodd â llawer o’r arferion a’r traddodiadau a roddwyd ar waith gan ei ewythr. Treuliodd ddeng mlynedd ar hugain yn Abergwaun hyd ei farw yn 1937, yn 90 oed.

Yn nyddiau Worthington, cefnogwyd yr helgwn gan farchogion ar gefn ceffylau. Yn raddol, gostyngodd y marchogion a daeth cefnogwyr ar droed a cherbydau modur cynnar yn eu lle, fel yn y llun hwn.
