Saif bwthyn ‘Carreg -yr -Eos’ mewn lle unigryw – uwchlaw i draeth y Slâd. Mae’r enw yn hynafol ac i’w weld ar fapiau cynnar. Beth yw’r hanes y tu ôl i’r enw anarferol? Does gennym ni ddim gwybodaeth pendant ar hyn o bryd – dim ond awgrymiadau. (Mae croeso i chi hala eich syniadau, wrth gwrs.) Isod mae ychydig o ffeithiau a ddatgelwyd ynghylch y lle trwy dudalennau y ‘County Echo’.

‘Carreg -yr -Eos’ cottage stands in an unique location – above the beach at The  Slade. The name is of long standing and appears on early maps. It means ‘stone or rock of the nightingale’.  What is the story behind the unusual name? We have no concrete information at the moment – just suggestions. (You are welcome to share your ideas, of course.) Below are a few facts revealed about the place through the pages of the ‘County Echo’.


FISHGUARD Mr David Griffiths‘ conveyance will leave Fishguard in time for the” concert at St Nicholas tomorrow (Friday) evening. Seats should be booked at once. (County Echo 23-1-1902)

Births.  Jan. 15th, at the Slade, Fishguard, the wife of Mr David Griffiths, posting-master, of a son. (County Echo 15-1-1903)

Births. February 24th, at Carreg-yr-Eos, Fishguard, the wife of Mr David Griffiths, posting-master, of a daughter. (County Echo 2-3-1905)

BIRTHS. August 12th, at Carreg-yr-eos, Slade, Fishguard, the wife of Mr David Griffiths of a son. (County Echo 16-8-1906)


Mae carreg fedd ym mynwent Eglwys y Santes Fair (Penygroes) yn dwyn y geiriau yma/ A memorial stone at St Mary’s Cemetery bears the following inscription-

CHERISHED MEMORIES OF A BELOVED HUSBAND,

JAMES HARRIES, CARREG YR EOS, 1901 -1971. AT REST.

ALSO HIS WIFE-

        ANNIE MONICA HARRIES,           1903-1994.
