| This photo shows the members of Lower Fishguard ‘Band of Hope’ in 1924. This was a social group attached to the small Baptist Chapel which stood on the corner near the bridge. It was demolished at the end of the 1960s in a road improvement scheme. For decades previous to this, Sunday School and Band of Hope meetings were held here. Regular prayer meetings were held each Tuesday evening at 7pm, and Mr Dafi Jenkins would read from the Bible at the start of each meeting. The Chapel was attached to Hermon, up in the town, but in the 1940s and 1950s, Cwm children always attended their own afternoon Sunday School in the village. This was as well as attending morning and evening services at Hermon. There would be an annual trip for the Cwm Sunday School to Tenby or Aberystwyth. In addition, Mrs Mattie Jones the Siop would arrange for a horse and cart to pick the children up and carry them up to a field at Cilshafe to have a picnic in a field. These traditions lasted right up until the chapel building was demolished. The little lad in the front row, between six girls dressed in white, is called Roy Jenkins. He was 4 yrs old. He and his brother Randal, and sister Margaret lived with their parents, Tom and Anita Jenkins at the mill in Glyn-y-mel Rd. Mr Tom Jenkins was the last miller.

Roedd y Capel ynghlwm wrth Hermon, i fyny yn y dre’, ond yn y 1940au – 1960au, roedd Ysgol Sul y Cwm yn cael ei gynnal am 2 o’r gloch yn y Capel Bach. Byddai teuluoedd hefyd yn mynychu gwasanaethau bore a hwyr yn Hermon. Byddai taith flynyddol gan Ysgol Sul y Cwm i Ddinbych-y-pysgod neu Aberystwyth. Yn ogystal, byddai Mrs Mattie Jones y Siop yn trefnu ceffyl a chart i godi’r plant a’u cario i fyny i barc ar Fferm Cilshafe i gael picnic. Parhaodd y traddodiadau hyn hyd at ddymchwel y Capel Bach. Enw’r bachgen bach yn y rhes flaen, rhwng chwech o ferched mewn ffrogiau gwyn, yw Roy Jenkins. Pedair oed ydy Roy yn y llun. Roedd ef a’i frawd Randal, a’i chwaer Margaret yn byw gyda’u rhieni, Tom ac Anita Jenkins yn y felin yng Glyn-y-mel. Mr Tom Jenkins oedd y melinydd olaf. |

My grandfather’s brother William John Owen, is the young man 2nd row on far right. Son of Pratt & Martha Owen, GlynYMel Road. He was a school teacher in Fishguard and died of TB in the mid 1920’s when he was in his 20s.
What a great article about my grandparents Tom & Anita Jenkins. Margaret Couzens nee Jenkins was my mother, Roy and Randal were my uncles.
