No Electricity Required!

In 1952 William Williams of Fron Uchaf, Dinas, installed this hydram to pump spring water uphill to a storage tank above the farmhouse. The pump has operated night and day since then, with only very occasional servicing by Penstar of Rhoshill.

The hydram needs no external power source, e.g. electricity. It is an automatic pumping device which utilises a small fall of water to lift a fraction of the supply flow to a much greater height. Its only moving parts are two valves. This provides very high reliability and a long operational life.

These pumps are still manufactured by Blakes Allspeeds at Accrington, mainly for export to regions lacking electricity.
In the photo, spring water enters via the rear grey pipe and exits via the black one. Surplus water exits at the front. During pumping a regular thump-thump-thump is heard.
