Dinas - Jericho

A modern view

This is a postcard view of the area of Dinas known as Jericho.

From the style of dress, it was probably taken around 1910. It is interesting to see the culvert which runs in front of the houses with stone “bridges” enabling access to each gate. This was a feature of Dinas which had open ditches alongside the roadway – this was to capture the water which drained off the hillside behind the village.

These ditches were a scene of a tragedy when a local man, during a storm, lost his footing and was washed into a rain swollen culvert. His body became jammed under a crossing point to a property and on the following morning all that could be seen of him were his wellington booted feet protruding from the drain.
