Capel Tabor Chapel, Dinas

Effaith storm ddifrifol yn Tabor - Storm damage at Tabor, 23-3-1905 'The County Echo'
Gweinidog a deaconiaid Capel Tabor (Bedyddwyr), Dinas. Minister and deacons of Tabor Baptist Chapel, Dinas. (L-R) Captain James Harries, Stephen George, George Davies, Parchg /Rev John W Maurice, Dan George, Evan Evans, Captain James. C. 1912
Y Capel tua 1905 / The Chapel c. 1905

Adeiladwyd Capel y Bedyddwyr, Tabor ym 1792. Ymestynwyd ef ym 1815, a’i ailadeiladu ym 1842. Adnewyddwyd yr adeilad ym 1882. Gwnaed newidiadau pellach ym 1921, gan gynnwys ychwanegu ffenestr liw y tu ôl i’r pulpud. Er hyn, mae’r tu mewn yn dyddio, i raddau helaeth o 1842.  David Davies oedd y gweinidog 39 oed yn Tabor yn 1851. Yn wreiddiol o Lanbadarn Fawr, sir Aberteifi, yr oedd yn briod, er nad ymddengys iddo ef a’i wraig Margaret gael unrhyw blant. Dengys cyfrifiad 1861 mai Griffith H Roberts, o Langybi, Sir Gaernarfon, oedd gweinidog Tabor. Ym Mwlch Mawr yr oedd ef a’i wraig Jane a’u teulu yn byw. Ymddengys iddo ddod yn weinidog yma tua 1858, a bu yma am bymtheng mlynedd. Codwyd tysteb iddo yn 1873 pan ddaeth ei weinidogaeth yma i ben, a gwelir ei fod yn weinidog a phregethwr poblogaidd a gwerthfawr.

Tabor Baptist Chapel was built in 1792. It was extended in 1815, and rebuilt in 1842. It was renovated in 1882 and in 1921, when a stained glass window behind the pulpit was added. The interior largely dates from around 1842. David Davies was the 39 yr old minister at Tabor in 1851. He hailed from Llanbadarn Fawr in Cardiganshire,  was married, though he and his wife Margaret were childless. In 1861, Griffith H Roberts from Llangybi was the minister at Tabor. He and his wife Jane and their family lived at Bwlch Mawr. He arrived at Tabor in 1858, and remained here for fifteen years till 1873. He was a popular and valued minister and preacher.

  • Griffith H Roberts was my three times step grandfather. In 1850 he was shipwrecked when the Arfonia was wrecked on Goodricke Sands on 20th November 1850. I believe my three times great grandfather, Seth Jones, died in this incident. The survivors were taken in by the Calvinist Methodists in Fishguard. He returned to Anglesey where he married my widowed 3 times great grandmother, Jane Jones from Llanwenllwyfor. He became a Baptist minister, and in 1858 sailed the family and their furniture to Dinas Cross where he became minister of Tabor Chapel until he removed to St Peters in Carmarthen. He was a keen Liberal, held seats on the Carmarthen School Board, and was a frequent contributor to the Baptist periodicals. At the time of his death he was vice-chairman of Welsh Baptist Union, and was due to take up the presidency.
