| Mrs Mattie Francis was an an industrious and clever lady. She was always busy, planning her next project. Evidence of her work is apparent in many chapels. She loved working with needle and thread. She would win craft competitions at the agricultural shows annually. She presented examples of her work to a large number of good causes and they are an important record of a period in time when the town’s assets were more valued, and civic pride was more important to the people of the area. Mattie and her husband Clifford both worked for the G.P.O. In 1985, Clifford retired having worked ‘on the post’ for 46 years. He saw action in Africa and Italy during WW2 before returning to France for D-Day. Though they lived in Dinas originally, they moved to Llwynon, Vergam Terrace later. Clifford would do all the necessary mounting and framing required for Mattie’s embroidered pictures. They married in 1947 on the same day as the ‘Derby’ at Epsom. Clifford placed a bet on a horse called ‘My Love’ – and she won! On occasion, Mrs Francis would present an exhibition of her embroidery pictures in the windows of the Principality Building Society in West Street. Roedd Mattie a’i gŵr Clifford ill dau yn gweithio i’r G.P.O. Ym 1985, ymddeolodd Clifford ar ôl gweithio ‘ar y post’ am 46 mlynedd. Bu’n ymladd yn Affrica a’r Eidal yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd cyn dychwelyd i Ffrainc ar gyfer ‘D-Day’. Er eu bod yn byw yn Dinas yn wreiddiol, symudasant i Llwynon, Y Byrgam yn ddiweddarach. Byddai Clifford yn gwneud yr holl waith mowntio a fframio angenrheidiol ar gyfer lluniau Mattie. Priodasant yn 1947 ar yr un diwrnod â’r ‘Derby’ yn Epsom. Rhoddodd Clifford fet ar geffyl o’r enw ‘My Love’ – a hi enillodd! Yn achlysurol, byddai Mrs Francis yn cyflwyno arddangosfa o’i gwaith pwytho yn ffenestri Cymdeithas Adeiladu’r Principality yn Stryd y Wesh. Byddent yn cael eu hedmygu’n fawr. |
