The inhabitants gathered on Fishguard Square to celebrate the visit of the Mauretania to Fishguard Harbour; as can be seen, celebrations were not confined to just the Harbour area! The flags and bunting obscure the name of the Commercial Hotel, today’s Abergwaun Hotel. Next to the Royal Oak inn can be seen the now demolished shop belonging in 1850, to Mr James Symmons he was a painter, glazier and plumber and the brother of Rev Daniel Symmons. Mr James Symmons had a son of the same name, Rev James D Symmons, who carried on a mixed business here in ironmongery etc. His widowed sister, Mrs Harries, lived with him and helped to run the shop. Mr J.D Symmons entered the ministry, and for many years was the pastor of Berachah Calvanistic Methodist church in Goodwick.
Fishguard’s War memorial now stands on the site of J.D Symmons’ shop.
