Studio Portraits (2)

Another selection of images from an album lent to Ein Hanes on Fishguard Square which are believed to have been the work of Fishguard photographer, Henry Jackson. Henry Jackson’s family also ran a large store in West Street as general dealers and operated a market garden on what is now the Golden Mile. He was an active photographer in the town from around 1870 -1896.

Only three of the images have been identified in this group of photographs  – one is Dr Wall  who was a surgeon in the town between 1872 and 1878. He completed his medical training in the latter part of 1871 and took up his post in Fishguard shortly before marrying Emily Anstice of Tower Hill in the autumn of 1872.  Their first three children were born in the town before the family moved to Pembroke Dock in the Spring of 1878.

The second named photo records Owen James of West Street. Unfortunately, no further information about him has been found.

The third shows James Harries of The Square – he was possibly the nephew of Rev Daniel Symonds who had an ironmongers and general stores on the square – on the site of the current War Memorial.  The young man appears to be wearing a tassled cap of some description – can anyone suggest why this might have been?

The style of dress of the two ladies places them in the 1870s – have a look at the traditional Welsh hat next to the lady in black.

Is anyone able to add any information about these photographs? If so please comment below.
