Site survey of Llanychaer and surrounding areas near Fishguard in 1937

The Admiralty purchased in 1937 a large area of land in the Llanychaer and adjacent parishes near Fishguard. The valley was developed by the Ministry of Defence ( MoD) as an armament depot to store and supply naval mines and munitions ordnance to the Royal Navy.

The Admiralty allowed the National Museum of Wales to examine and make records of any sites and buildings of interest.

Sir Cyril Fox visited the Trecwn area in June 1937 and made detailed records and drawings of the cottages in the area including those in ruins, deserted and in various stages of decay.
Sir Cyril Fox published the 22 page article titled ‘Peasant Crofts in North Pembrokeshire’.

The photograph is a two-roomed cottage, Llain-wen Isaf, Llanychaer, Pembrokeshire. The cottage has a croglofft above the bedroom and a small dairy opening at the living room.

It is one of several photographs in the article.

  • This cottage and a couple of others in the same area are described, and illustrated with internal plans, in the classic text The Welsh House by Iorwerth Peate (1940/44, reprinted by The Llanerch Press 2014). They fall under the category of ‘bwthyn croglofft’ cottages – single storey crofts into which sleeping compartments had been introduced.
When the MoD took over the area any remaining inhabitants had to evacuate and the cottages were taken down.
