19th Century Georges

George family of Pencaer
Len Urwin

This c1915 studio photo by Charles Edwards shows eight siblings of the George family who grew up in Pencaer and Fishguard. Their names, in order of birth, were Essex, William, David, Walter, Francis, Mary, Martha and Ellen.

All were born to Timothy and Anne George between 1840 and 1861, and shared a common great-grandfather, William George, with Prime Minister David Lloyd George.

Essex married Anne Llewelyn and moved to Cardiff: William married Anne Rowlands: David married Sarah Collins: Walter married Phebe Thomas: Francis married Mary James: Mary married builder David Davies and moved to St Dogmaels: Martha married grocer George Williams: Ellen married builder Enoch Davies. All except Ellen had children.

Essex became a master mariner and was a direct ancestor of actress Ruth Madoc. William was a stonemason and farmed at Penwennol in Dinas. David and Walter formed a saddlery and harness business in Fishguard, while Francis was a lifelong builder in the town.

William is second from the left, Francis is fourth and Essex is fifth. The ladies read Ellen, Mary and Martha. Who are David and Walter?

  • Lovely to see these photos. The George family are related through marriage of my cousin Anne Walter Evans into Williams family. Thank you again.

  • Susan Edwards, whose grandmother Margaret Annie George was the daughter of David George, has confirmed that David is the first on the left, making Walter the third from the left.
