Memories of the beginnings of Henner WI

This lovely little poem was found among the things of Nurse Beryl Davies who was a founder member of Henner WI in 1955.  With thanks to her son, David for sharing.

Henner WI 1955

The year was nineteen fifty-five.
When some women got together
To try and form a WI
and meet at the school in Henner.
Fourteen women that was all,
However, could they start
But with Miss Perkins in the chair
They soon were given heart.
Mrs. George came from Garnwnda
And Mrs. Lewis Bronmor
There was Mrs. Vittle and Mrs. Young
to mention only four.
Then there was Betty Bwlchyrhos
And Beryl and Margaret Pontiago
These put off their acting career
Almost ending up in panto.
From Carlem came Mrs. Cateaux
How lucky we all were.
Our skills in handicraft improved.
And the thanks were due to her.
There was Mrs. Jones the customs.
Mrs. Alice Williams too
Mrs. Maxwell from Brynawel
And now we’re almost through.
Mrs. Davies from Penysgwarne
Makes it now complete.
The list of fourteen members
Who at Henner school did meet.
The years went by the list increased.
Too many names to read.
But how we remember so many nights.
Some very good night indeed.
There were the mystery trips by bus.
Always arranged so well
That everyone knew where they would land
But no one would dare to tell.
The choir sang delightful songs.
Perfect in pitch and tone
Starting with “the old camp fire”
And ending with “going home”.
The standards of the concerts were very high
The props you could not buy.
Women risked their pretty heads
To act as a coconut shy!
The Maypole dance was oh! So good
And the plays were such a treat.
Until someone broke her new false teeth
While trying to laugh and eat.
One could go on for ever
And talk of days gone by
But now we must think of the future
Of Henner WI.
